Central China Drama’s Chinese version of the play ‘Les Misérables’ condenses the million-word original into three and a half hours, preserving the complete narrative while delving into the author’s symbolic ideas embodied in each character. The creators have chosen to retain and enhance the literary nature of the original work, with all dialogues taken directly from the novel.

The play brings together a strong team from China and France and outstanding artists, directed by Jean Bellorini, the Dean of the French National People’s Theatre and a renowned theatre director, and led by the famous actor Liu Ye. Therefore, this is a play that belongs both to China and to the world.

The year 2024 marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France. As a treasure of human civilization, Central China Drama’s Chinese version of ‘Les Misérables’ will lead the audience into Hugo’s poetic and romantic literary world.

The play is part of the ‘Great Dramas in Beijing’ artistic creation incubation platform and a selected play for the ‘Great Dramas Looking East·2023 National Drama Exhibition Season’.

‘Les Misérables’ is important to the whole world; it is borderless and eternal. Hugo is a towering lighthouse, from which we can see the beauty of the world. Through this work, everyone can explore the kind side of human nature from the depths of their hearts, or conversely, the ugly side. — Director Jean Bellorini.

Open from 11/08 to 11/10, approximately 120 minutes (subject to the actual performance).
