The musical Cats is a masterpiece by Andrew Lloyd Webber, adapted from the fable poetry collection Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by British poet and Nobel laureate T.S. Eliot. Since its premiere in 1981, it has become an unsurpassed pinnacle in the history of musicals, garnering widespread acclaim globally and setting numerous box office records. The show has toured over 30 countries and 300 cities, been translated into more than 20 languages, and won 7 Tony Awards for its unique plot, rich music and dance, and deeply moving character portrayals.
‘Moon Goddess’ Sarah Brightman and renowned singer Elaine Paige have both passionately performed the immortal song ‘Memory’ from Cats, with over 180 recordings by 150 artists worldwide. In the UK alone, ‘Memory’ has been played more than 46,875 times on radio and television media, and in the US, it has reached millions of plays. In addition to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s compositions, Cats was produced by globally renowned musical producer Cameron Mackintosh (known for musicals like Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera), with Gillian Lynne (known for choreographing The Phantom of the Opera) as the choreographer and director, and Trevor Nunn (known for directing Les Misérables) also serving as director. The world-class creative team has joined forces to create this dreamlike musical, making it one of the most successful musicals in history. This round of performances will gather the original cast with a super strong lineup, with comprehensive upgrades in dance, stage design, costumes, and props. Over 250 luxurious costumes and more than 30 wigs will be featured, creating a dreamlike stage design with fantastic and varied lighting effects, immersing the audience in a feline ball as soon as they enter. The rich and diverse dances, combined with passionate stage expressiveness and infectiousness, will present the most authentic world-class classic to Chinese audiences.
