Shi Xinji’s recent artistic creations delve deeply into the classical literary work ‘Dream of the Red Chamber’. His focus is particularly on the depiction of youth, a period of life that is both splendid and fleeting. This exploration contrasts sharply with his previous work, which was more focused on landscape themes. In his new pieces, Shi Xinji’s nostalgia and praise for youth stand out, juxtaposing with the traditional seclusion represented by objects and the vibrancy of youth that symbolizes worldly emotions.
The scenes from ‘Dream of the Red Chamber’, such as the Illusory Realm of Great Void and Grand View Garden, serve as significant sources of inspiration for Shi Xinji. In his creations, reality and illusion are skillfully intertwined, adding a new layer of depth to his works. He masterfully combines the traditional Chinese ‘blank-leaving’ method with contemporary light and shadow processing, reminiscent of Caravaggio’s style, to integrate the subtle characteristics of traditional Chinese art with the more intuitive aspects of Western art traditions.
