In 2024, the ‘Tai · Tide Tide Music Festival’ – ‘We all grow up like this.’ Cantonese songs accompany us as we grow up, through the highs and lows of growth. Whenever the melody plays, it always evokes deep memories within us. No matter what situation we face, there is always a Cantonese song that can give us comfort.
After passing through the golden age of Cantonese, there are still a group of young creators who still insist on creating in Cantonese. Their expressions in dialectal mother tongue and music form a connection of blood and breath, bringing music back to the local. At this year’s Tide Music Festival, we have invited creative singers薛德勇 Monkey and陈俊烻 Zino cultivated by the music pilot program ‘Big Station Master’ founded by senior musician Zhao Zengxi. Also invited are Guangzhou’s original Cantonese band Mover and the new generation singer-songwriter Sea Tail who integrates the Hoklo dialect under the Minnan language system into creation to perform original music and popular songs. In the early stage of his debut, he became popular with many positive and inspiring works, such as ‘High Mountains and Low Valleys’, ‘Hymn’, ‘Once in a Lifetime’, ‘A Pair of Hands’, etc., and won him many honors for creative singers and song awards. In 2020, he went to Berklee College of Music in the United States to further his music studies and seek breakthroughs in creation. During the process, he created the album ‘Finding Charlie’. Among the released songs, ‘The Other Side of Loneliness’, ‘Black Square’, ‘Re-taking Hobby Classes’, etc. once topped various popular charts. In 2021, he released a mini album themed on philosophy, ‘Philosophy’. Two of the released songs also won the championships of three stations. And the single ‘Front and Backstage’ in 2023 became the champion song of four stations, showing remarkable strength. In 2024, he reinterpreted his representative work ‘High Mountains and Low Valleys’ on the Japanese YouTube platform THE FIRST TAKE and ranked 5th on YouTube Trending for Music in Hong Kong.Xue Deyong, also known as Monkey, is a triple-threat creative artist who started with street performances and has since participated in various music events, including Sai Kung Liberty, Blank Spaces, Lost Stars, Hong Kong Art Museum, Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival, and performances in universities, shopping malls, and more. In 2019, he joined the ‘Da Tai Zhu’ music label, managed by the renowned music producer Zhao Zengxian, continuing to share stories through original works and releasing 21 songs on major music platforms. Chen Junxun, also known as Zino, is a singer-songwriter who released his second original song in 2022, available on all major music platforms. He was the champion of the 2012 ‘New Zealand Chinese New Talent Singing Competition’ and served as a music consultant for the documentaries ‘OneWay’ and ‘Year Of The Ren’, as well as the arranger for the adaptation of ‘Lovers and Confidants’ performed by Sally Yeh on Hunan TV’s ‘Vocal Life’. The music of ‘Sea Tail’, created by a young musician, is like listening to an ancient tale, skillfully incorporating ‘nursery rhymes’ into modern music composition, always bringing a sense of tranquility. Her subtle emotions reveal the beauty of ‘love’, just as her works and her name are as sensitive as the end of the world: the tail of the sea. Her representative works include ‘Dreaming Every Day’ and ‘Rumbling’. The Mover Band, a state-based original band, consists of lead singer Calvin, guitarists Dingding and Ah Cong, bassist Ah Liang, synthesizer player Gigi, and drummer Ah Yi. Their songs are primarily in Cantonese, rooted in Pop Rock, and incorporate elements of shoegaze, Alternative-Rock, and Pop Punk. ‘Move’ signifies to move emotionally, and ‘Mover’ is about transporting emotions. By carefully experiencing every segment of life and combining the preferences of each member, they transport their music to every listener to feel their inner world. One day, they will let people know that Cantonese songs have never died. At the end of 2023, the band’s first full-length Cantonese album ‘Keep Moving’ was released on global streaming platforms, and they began their first national tour in November 2024.
