You Street Realization has launched the ‘Ancient Curator Series’ since 2022, inviting Chinese art historians and curators to collaborate with us in planning exhibitions. Through partnerships with artists, we aim to engage in dialogues with traditional Chinese art using new artistic presentations, bridging the past and present. This is the third exhibition in the series, with Dr. Wang Guanyu, the Deputy Curator of Chinese Artifacts at the Art Museum of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, serving as the guest curator. Three senior artists from Jingdezhen and Hong Kong, Gu Yue, Huang Lizhen, and Zheng Yi, are invited to participate. Finding an appropriate balance between tradition and contemporary art has always been an important issue in artistic creation. The three exhibiting artists approach from the perspectives of tradition, the present, and sustainable development for the future, focusing on the rich content and infinite possibilities of ceramic color expression. Drawing inspiration from the museum’s collection, they create works that reflect their unique understanding and expression of contemporary ceramic art through their technical specialties and aesthetic styles. Known as the ‘Thousand-Year Porcelain Capital,’ Jingdezhen is home to Gu Yue, who graduated from Jingdezhen Ceramic University. Gu Yue’s work, themed around nature and flowers, integrates traditional shaping and painting with contemporary aesthetics, showcasing the vitality of a new generation of potters. Huang Lizhen has been focusing on the study of clay and Hong Kong culture in recent years. For this exhibition, she draws inspiration from the historical anecdotes of the century-old residence area in Wan Chai, Nam Kok Terrace, and uses her delicate pottery skills to create a historical map of Wan Chai through ceramic tile collage. She also uses the native soil from the Nam Kok Terrace area, combined with the latest ceramic 3D printing technology, to lead the audience in discovering stories behind current urban development. Zheng Yi, in recent years, has successfully developed a method to upgrade ceramic waste into a moldable clay, revolutionizing the world’s perception of ceramics. Visitors can see her new creations made from this innovative material in the exhibition. Zheng Yi likens herself to Yu Gong, the ancient figure who moved mountains, as she gradually paves the way for a sustainable future in ceramics. The exhibition is open from 09/26 to 01/31, with performance times and durations subject to the venue’s schedule.
