The time-honored roast duck restaurant in Peking, ‘Fujude’, of the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre. The old shopkeeper retires behind the scenes due to illness. The Hong Kong Repertory Theatre was established in 1977 under the leadership of the Hong Kong government. It is the oldest and largest professional theatre troupe in Hong Kong, China. In 2001, it was corporatized and has a complete and professional establishment. It takes ‘balanced repertoire’ as its development direction. The cultural mission of the troupe is to improve the overall cultural quality of Hong Kong, strengthen the humanistic spirit in society, give play to Hong Kong’s advantage as a city where Eastern and Western cultures meet, and forge a contemporary theatre aesthetics with Hong Kong characteristics. In the past 47 years, nearly 500 plays have been produced, constantly creating theatre classics and establishing the leading position of Hong Kong’s flagship theatre troupe. Hong Kong Repertory Theatre has always focused on exchanges with the mainland and internationally, actively promoting local drama culture abroad. Its activities have covered various cities on the mainland, Taipei, Macau, as well as Singapore, Nagoya, Seoul, San Francisco, New York and Toronto. Some representative works include ‘Dear, Hu Xueyan’, ‘Principles’, ‘Marriage’, ‘De Ling and Empress Dowager Cixi’ (jointly produced with Xian Tong Drama and Tianjin People’s Art Theatre), ‘Father’, ‘The Last Supper’, ‘The Best Restaurant in Peking’, ‘Vague’ and ‘From Admiralty to Moscow’. They have stood out in many important award competitions, including the Shanghai Magnolia Drama Performing Arts Award, Chinese Drama Festival, Chinese Drama Festival, Shanghai One Drama Award, International Theatre ‘Academy Award’ (director award) and Asian Academy Creative Award. The awards cover actors, playwrights, directors, stage design, Special Contribution Award for Drama Development in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, best investor, best producer of Chinese drama, media attention award and so on. The productions of Hong Kong Repertory Theatre are also loved by mainland media. The musical ‘Heading Ball’ was rated as the ‘Annual Popular Musical’ of the 2017 popular performances by The Beijing News and was also selected as one of the ‘Top Ten Artistic Performances’. ‘The Last Supper’ was selected as one of the top ten/six best works in 2013 by Beijing Time Out and The Beijing News. In 2019, the Korean version of this play premiered in Seoul and won the Best Work Award of the 7th Seoul Drama Awards. Its Mandarin version was also publicly performed in cities such as Beijing, Shenzhen, Xi’an, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Shanghai in 2021, and was restaged with honors in Beijing and Shenzhen in 2023.
