Pai Fang Street is located in the old town of Chaozhou, where numerous arcade buildings are preserved along the street. There are 22 archways standing on the street, narrating the glorious deeds of many Chaozhou heroes in history. Each archway has a story behind it, which is intriguing and thought-provoking.
Of course, the numerous Chaozhou delicacies on the street are not to be missed. It is said that the earliest archway on the street appeared in the 12th year of the Zhengde era of the Ming Dynasty (1517), known as the ‘Pillar History’ archway. Historically, there were as many as 39 archways here, but they were damaged for various reasons. Today, 22 have been reconstructed, standing across the street with an ancient charm.
Most of the archways are established for scholars, top imperial examination graduates, and ministers, recording their great achievements and highlighting the outstanding talents and beautiful landscapes of Chaozhou. In addition to visiting historical sites, the delicacies along the street are also tempting. Chaozhou hand-beaten beef balls, taro cake, and other specialties are very distinctive. The ‘Three Treasures of Chaozhou’ – Buddha’s hand, yellow skin fermented bean paste, and old medicinal oranges – can be considered excellent choices for souvenirs.
The street is open all year round and accessible 24 hours a day.
