Guiling Island is located in the sea area opposite the southern coast of Jiesheng Town, Chengqu District, Shanwei City. Surrounding it are five small islands including Niupizhou, Chili, Yingyu, Qingyu and Laotouyu. They echo some exposed reefs and form an island group. The island group is 1.8 kilometers away from the land coast to the north; while the main island is 3.17 kilometers away from the land coast and only 13 nautical miles away from the international sea lane. The total area is 0.84 square kilometers. Because the island is shaped like a sea turtle and has a long lifespan, it is named Guiling Island. It is also a must-pass place on the route from Xiamen, Shantou to Guangzhou. Guiling Island not only has unique and rich landforms, but also has beautiful mountain and sea scenery. The sea water around the island is deep blue, and the islands and reefs are dotted, and the scenery is like a painting. Some small islands are piled up with huge rocks, and seabirds inhabit them. Sometimes they fly low to forage, and sometimes they return to their nests to lay eggs. When climbing Yingyu, you can see eggs everywhere. Bend down to pick them up and return with a full load. Some small islands are covered with lush vegetation and are like another pearl on the azure ocean. Some reefs are shaped like rice urns, and local villagers call them ‘rice urn stones’. On the northwest side of Guiling Island is a seaside beach. The beach is distributed on both sides of the dock in front of the Mazu Temple. The two beaches are 240 meters long and 20-30 meters wide. They are mainly composed of fine sand, which is soft and white, and the beach slope is gentle. It is an ideal seaside bathing place. The beach on the east side is 170 meters long. The width and sand quality are similar to those of the west beach, but there are more reefs on the beach and in the sea. On the front slope of the seaside beach, there is a large Mazu Temple built by local fishermen. It enshrines Lin Moniang, the ‘Goddess of Peace in the Strait’. Therefore, Guiling Island has become a center of belief for people in Shanwei area and compatriots from Hong Kong and Macao. This island can be said to have gods, seas, sands and stones, and the mountain and sea scenery is very beautiful.
