Chanyuan Temple scenic area is centered around the Chanyuan Temple, a revival site of the Linji Sect of Buddhism, which was originally built during the Ming Dynasty (1425). Surrounding the temple, one can find cultural landscapes from various periods as well as geological formations. The Crown Prince’s Hermitage represents Confucian culture in Tianmu Mountain, featuring historical relics such as the Scripture Division Platform and Eye Washing Pond; the Zhejiang West First Middle School Monument and Liuchun House serve as direct witnesses to the Western Zhejiang resistance against war; Shuangqing Stream embodies the fairness of nature’s creations. Chanyuan Temple is nestled beneath the peaks of Zhaoming, Xu Ri, Cuiwei, and Yanghe in Western Tianmu Mountain. To the left of the temple, a clear stream winds around, with the Qinglong Pond often rippling with waves, while ancient trees stand tall and lush in front of and behind the temple, providing a canopy of shade. Chanyuan Temple is one of the famous temples in Zhejiang, known as a site where the Vajra Deity manifested its traces. After multiple reconstructions and renovations, the temple has a grand scale and a complete layout, divided into three axes: central, eastern, and western. Today, the buildings to the east of the Mahavira Hall were destroyed by Japanese bombings during the Anti-Japanese War and have vanished, but their ruins remain; the structures along the western axis are still largely intact. Walking along the ancient paths of the scenic area, following in the footsteps of ancestors, breathing fresh air amidst the forests of Chan, and escaping the noise and chaos of the world, one can calm the mind and feel the beauty of nature, as if in an idyllic retreat. It is an excellent place for summer retreat, relaxation, Chan meditation, and yoga. Opening hours are from January 1st to December 31st, 08:00 to 16:00.
