With the support of the Prada Foundation, Prada presents the solo exhibition ‘Distance of the Moon’ by Li Shuang (born 1990 in China). The exhibition will be held at the Prada Rong House from November 6, 2024, to January 12, 2025. The Rong House, a historical residence in Shanghai built in 1918, was restored by Prada and reopened to the public in October 2017. ‘Distance of the Moon’ marks Li Shuang’s first solo exhibition in Asia, featuring a series of new works specially created for the Prada Rong House. ‘Communication and technology have always been the sources of my inspiration. When communication can only be conducted in digital form, technology and algorithms become cold and unfeeling, compressing everyone into pixels, with the physical body rendered powerless. Communicating with loved ones, especially parents, is inherently challenging and becomes even more difficult in a digital environment. Instant messaging, video calls, and emoticon stickers – these tools, which should have made communication more convenient, lost their original magic and instead increased the distance between each other. Digital communication seems to have robbed text of its meaning. Sending messages becomes depressing, sometimes even a burden. Messages are sent, but it seems nothing has been conveyed… Every attempt at communication seems to end in miscommunication. I grew up in a typical East Asian family, where intergenerational tensions are more pronounced against the background of the one-child policy. In this new installation, I illuminate the shadows cast by technological ‘progress’ with light.’ Li Shuang stated. The opening hours are from November 6 to January 12, with specific business status subject to daily opening conditions.
