The 4th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Art Festival (Art Festival) is scheduled to take place from October 19, 2024, to November 24, 2024. A series of exciting activities will be staged in the ‘9+2’ cities of the Greater Bay Area, showcasing the new vitality of the cultural and humanistic region. This marks the first time the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government is hosting the Art Festival, with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department responsible for planning the entire event. They aim to innovate and collaborate in a multifaceted manner, coordinating high-quality cultural and artistic resources from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao. The festival not only presents a series of spectacular performances by top artists and art groups from the Greater Bay Area and overseas but also plans to invite local artists to collaborate with art groups from the region, fostering creativity and talent exchange. This approach highlights the modernity and diversity of the region’s culture and actively plays the role of Hong Kong as a ‘center for cultural and artistic exchange between China and the rest of the world’.

With the theme ‘Diversity Integration – Creating Infinite Opportunities’, over 100 exciting events will be launched simultaneously across the cities in the Greater Bay Area, including performing arts, museum exhibitions, library activities, and film screenings. Artists from Hong Kong and other Greater Bay Area cities are invited to collaborate, creating impressive stage performances and promoting creativity and talent exchange, showcasing the new vitality of the cultural and humanistic region from multiple perspectives.

The opening program ‘Sound River’ is a contemporary work by the renowned Chinese composer and conductor Tan Dun, who has spent 12 years traveling from Europe, through the Arab world and Central Asia, to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Following the footsteps of human civilization, he has created a film and music interwoven piece, recording the vanishing sounds, instruments, and cultures of different ancient cities along the Silk Road through 16 short films. Tan Dun has woven the images and sounds he recorded into a symphonic poem and named this work, which carries the history of human civilization, ‘Sound River’. The concert is conducted by Tan Dun and features a new orchestra composed of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, and Macao Orchestra, making its world premiere at the Greater Bay Area Art Festival. The 16 specially produced short films are played in sync with the orchestra during the performance, engaging the audience in a ‘Silk Road of Sound’ that traverses the past and future. The entire festival is open from 10/19 to 11/24, with specific operating hours subject to the day’s opening status.
