Qingdao Grand Theatre is a landmark of public cultural facilities in Qingdao, covering an area of 87,000 square meters, with an exterior resembling two white grand pianos. The mountains, seas, and clouds of Qingdao form the thematic elements of the theatre’s design. Water, the source of life, and the sea, the soul of the city, converge with streams, tides, and the harmony of nature to create the main structure of the Grand Theatre.
The Grand Theatre is divided into four main functional areas: the Opera Hall, the Concert Hall, the Multi-Function Hall, the Reception Training Center, and the Performing Arts Exchange Center. These main functional areas can operate independently without interfering with each other, naturally connected by the silver-plated beam roof, forming a layout that is both separate and open, integrating with the surrounding square, greenery, and roads.
The Opera Hall, one of the main core performance venues of the Qingdao Grand Theatre, occupies the northern part of the complex with a ‘horseshoe’ architectural layout, equipped with world-class stage facilities and equipment suitable for operas, ballets, dance dramas, traditional Chinese operas, large-scale magic performances, acrobatics, and large-scale variety shows as well as conferences.
The Concert Hall, located on the southern side of the complex, primarily performs large-scale symphonies, national music, and chamber music. The stage (performance platform) is 23 meters wide and 12 meters deep, accommodating a 120-member four-pipe orchestra and an 180-member choir.
The Multi-Function Hall can accommodate 448 people and is mainly used for small-scale song and dance, traditional Chinese operas, dramas, vocal music, and small-scale orchestral and chamber music performances, as well as meetings, celebrations, and exhibitions.
