Pingshan Village in Yixian County is surrounded by mountains and rivers. The houses in the village are built along both banks of the stream. In order to facilitate the communication between residents on both banks, in the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty, eight stone arch bridges were built on the small stream, commonly known as the ‘Eight Ancient Bridges of Changning’. The folk houses built along the stream, the simple stone bridges, and the gurgling stream under the bridges form a typical mountain village charm of ‘small bridges, flowing water, and people’.
Since Pingshan Village is a village inhabited by people surnamed Shu, it is also called Shu Village. There is a small street by the stream, mostly small businesses with shops in the front and workshops or residences in the back. There are seven ancestral halls preserved in the village, including Guangyutang and Chengdaotang. Among them, Shu Qingyutang is a very rare Ming Dynasty clan ancestral hall in southern Anhui. In addition, there are more than 200 houses from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. There are also scenic spots and historical sites such as the Three Aunts Temple with the story of ‘three women eating peaches and turning into immortals by becoming carps’, Changning Lake with the story of ‘dying for love and turning into mandarin ducks’, the wall-attached memorial archway of the imperial bodyguard, the former residence of Shu Xiuwen, Yulan Courtyard, Hulu Well, and Small Embroidery Tower. Shucun in Jiudu has beautiful scenery in all seasons. In spring, there are gentle winds and drizzles, and the peach blossom water rises; in summer, it is cool for people to enjoy the shade, and the willows are drooping and lush; on autumn nights, people can enjoy the moon, and the water reflects the movement of the bridges; in winter, when people walk on the snow, the bamboos are green and the bamboo shoots are sprouting.
