The Hulu Pool is located to the east of Shen Garden in Shaoxing, once the meeting place of Lu You and Tang Wan. It has preserved its original status from the Song Dynasty to the present. Originally a lotus pond, it is commonly known as the Hulu Pool due to its shape resembling a gourd. Lu You’s verse, ‘Beneath the heartbreak bridge, the spring waves are green, where the startled swan once cast its shadow,’ depicts Tang Wan’s graceful demeanor reflected in the pool’s waters, as if seeing her charming silhouette within, intensifying the sense of sorrow. It is open all year round and accessible 24 hours a day.
