Yuyin Mountain House is a private garden built by Wu Bin, a successful candidate in the imperial examinations in the Qing Dynasty. It was built in 1866 and is one of the more delicate ones among the four famous gardens in Lingnan. It is also one of the four famous gardens in Guangdong. In terms of design structure, it fully takes into account the climatic characteristics of Lingnan. Its small and exquisite, antique and delicate layout is extremely artistic.
Every brick, every tile, every plant and every tree reflects the architectural talent of this successful candidate. Yuyin Mountain House vividly shows the open, diverse and practical characteristics of Lingnan gardens. There is a saying that ‘hidden without being exposed, shrinking a dragon into an inch’. Above the square pool between Shenliu Hall and Linchi Other House lies a delicate covered bridge called ‘Washing Red and Crossing Green’. It is only 20 meters long, but it shows the sense of hierarchy between the vegetation pavilions on both sides to the fullest. It can be called the finishing touch of the entire mountain house architecture. The layout of Yuyin Mountain House can be said to be never tiresome to look at. Many elements in Chinese classical gardens are presented here. The small mountain house contains pavilions, halls, chambers, verandas, bridges, corridors, embankments, landscapes, plants and trees within three hundred paces. Brick carvings, wood carvings, lime carvings, stone carvings and other works are rich and colorful, making the overall landscape even more shining. The love of poetry of this successful candidate is also reflected in the garden. It is said that ‘there must be a lintel for every door, and there must be a couplet for every scene’.
