Litchi Bay Stream is a renowned scenic spot in Guangzhou, immortalized in an ancient verse which reads, “A bay of emerald water, banks lined with scarlet litchi trees.” This poetic description captures the essence of Litchi Bay Stream. Historically, the pastoral beauty of this place was considered the foremost scenery in Lingnan and the birthplace of Liwan boat porridge. After reconstruction and development, Litchi Bay has once again brought to life the charm of the Lingnan water towns.
Located in the Xi Guan Pondou area of Liwan District in Guangzhou, Litchi Bay Stream is the collective name for several river branches, including Xi Guan Stream and Litchi Stream. Visitors can enjoy the area by strolling casually or taking a Litchi Bay tour boat. Entering from Pondou Road, one can wander along the stream and embark on a tour boat at the Wen Tower Square and Liang Clan Ancestral Hall. On the boat, visitors can enjoy tea and sample Cantonese dim sum while admiring the architectural styles of Lingnan on both banks. A tourist information center is situated near the Wen Tower.
If you choose to stroll, you can follow the En Ning Road to see the old buildings, leading to the scenic Litchi Bay Stream with its peach and willow greenery. You can then purchase a piece of water chestnut cake or water chestnut drink, one of the five specialties of Pondou, from a riverside vendor. Adjacent to this, Liwan Lake Park offers a bowl of boat porridge to savor. The Litchi Bay Stream is open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day.
