Kuiyuan, one of the five major overseas Chinese gardens, was built by American overseas Chinese Ma Zhuowen in 1922. The architecture is well-preserved and retains its original red brick structure with a square shape. The two artificial palm trees in front of the entrance stand tall and straight. During the time of the Third National Congress of the Communist Party, a very inconspicuous small house was chosen. Representatives coming to Guangzhou used this building, marked with the distinct 1922, as a reference for contact, thus giving Kuiyuan a special significance. Kuiyuan has now been rented by a group of young people and turned into an art gallery. The first floor is a gallery that hosts exhibitions from time to time, while the second floor is a café. The gallery is open all year round from 11:00 to 18:00.
