The Hexian Gu Tourist Scenic Area, also known as Xiaolou Xianyuan, is one of the eight scenic spots in Zengcheng. It is located in Xiaolouxu, Xiaolou Town, Zengcheng District, Guangzhou City. This scenic area belongs to a religious and cultural scenic area. It has unique human resources and a long cultural history. It is the hometown of He Xiangu, the female immortal among the ‘Eight Immortals’ in Chinese Taoism.

The scenic area is composed of He Xiangu’s ancestral temple, the celestial peach on the top of the temple, Xiangu Well, Huangyan Immortal Cave, He Xiangu Pagoda, He Xiangu Bell Tower, Millennium Immortal Vine Garden (Panlong Ancient Vine), Jizhou Island, and scenic spots such as Hexi’s native village and Xiangui Village. He Xiangu’s ancestral temple was built in the Ming Dynasty and has been repaired many times due to wars.

The ancestral temple has a brick and stone platform-beam structure, and both its main ridge and drooping ridges have upturned decorations. The official script door plaque engraved on the stone gate on the front of the mountain: ‘He Xiangu’s Ancestral Temple’, was written by Huang Peifang in Jiaoping, Wuwu year of Xianfeng. In the main hall of the second entrance of the temple, a standing statue of He Xiangu is enshrined.

The statue of He Xiangu is made of camphor wood and is about seventy centimeters high, dressed in the attire of a village girl in the Tang Dynasty. There are two major festivals in the ancestral temple. Every year on the seventh day of the third lunar month is He Xiangu’s birthday; on the eighth day of the eighth lunar month is the day when He Xiangu became an immortal. The incense in the temple is very strong.

The Panlong Ancient Vine, about 300 meters away from He Xiangu’s ancestral temple, has a history of a thousand years. It is formed by green vines winding around an ancient banyan tree and several miscellaneous trees. Therefore, the vines and trees are intertwined, and it is impossible to tell whether the vines grow on the trees. The origin of the vine is still a mystery. The thicker part of the trunk diameter of the ancient vine is about 150 centimeters, and the extended span is more than 30 meters.

It is known that the scientific name of the ancient vine is ‘Millettia dielsiana var. alba’, which is a rare plant in China. The ancient vine blooms in June like auspicious snow, and bears fruit in August. During the flowering season, the fragrance is everywhere and the aroma is overwhelming. From a distance, the ancient vine is like a white dragon, and the momentum is even more majestic. As the poem says: The ancient vine in the fairyland overflows with the vitality of spring, and a thousand years of vicissitudes contain mysteries.

Softness and hardness complement each other and are naturally strong. The proud bones turn into dragons and display extraordinary magnificence (Spring Vitality of Ancient Vine).
