Located in the northeast area of Sun Yat-sen University campus at 309, Xingang West Road, Guangzhou, the former residence of Prof. Chen Yinke stands on the second floor of a two-story building. This building, known as the ‘Ma Jinmo House’, was donated by Mrs. Ma Jinmo of America in 1911 in memory of her husband. Originally, it served as the residence of the principal of the Lingnan University Affiliated Middle School, Mr. Ge Pei. Later, well-known professors such as Wang Jisi, Yang Guorong, Rong Geng, and Shang Chengzuo also lived here. From the 1950s, Prof. Chen Yinke resided on the second floor of this building. Looking from a distance, the former residence faces south to north. Approaching from the east side along the school path, one can see a row of waist-high wooden fences, a half-open wooden gate, and a straight white path leading to the entrance. Beside the fence, there stands a brown granite stele engraved with ‘Prof. Chen Yinke’s Former Residence’ and a brief introduction of his life. Following the straight white path leads to the main entrance, where several small shuttered windows are closed. In front of the main entrance, there are three steps leading up to an arched door that is three steps wide, with red wooden doors half-open on both sides. Through the glass of the inner door, one can see the staircase to the second floor on the right. This is also the place where Prof. Chen Yinke gave his lectures. Looking up from the back of the former residence, one can see five large windows on the second floor with blue openwork porcelain carvings beneath them; on the first floor, there are four large windows on each side with a door of the same width in the middle. Unlike the second floor, all the doors and windows on the first floor have arched tops, and above the door, there is an old-fashioned street lamp. Together with the red walls, green tiles, and blue openwork, it subtly exudes a rare ancient charm. Climbing the same three steps as the main entrance, one can reach the rusty iron gate. In front of the iron gate, three branches of jasmine sway in the wind, and the new road sign on the upper left side of the gate reads: ‘SYSU Northeast Area 309’. The opening hours are from 09:00 to 17:00 all year round.
