Visiting the National Natural History Museum in Beijing, you will be able to see a collection of precious fossils of flora and fauna, including the skull fossil of the ancient Yellow River elephant, the giant Mamenchisaurus, and the Sanhe Chinese bird. Stepping into the Dinosaur Park within the museum, you are surrounded by lifelike dinosaur models, as if you have entered the dinosaur era millions of years ago.

The basic exhibitions currently in the museum include: ‘The Origin of Man’, The Splendor of Invertebrates, The Plant World, Dinosaur Park, Ancient Mammals, Ancient Reptiles, The Magic of Africa, and the Exploration Corner. Among them, the Dinosaur Park and the Hall of Ancient Reptiles are the most attractive to visitors.

In the Dinosaur Park, dozens of dinosaurs and their living scenes have been restored using advanced technology. Here, visitors can see: the huge Emei dragon hiding in the forest, the Pterosaur gliding in the sky, the Mamenchisaurus twisting its snake-like neck, the fierce Yongchuan dragon eyeing the huge Emei dragon, ready to make them a meal.

In the Hall of Ancient Reptiles, many dinosaur skeleton groups are displayed, such as the first dinosaur discovered by the Chinese – the Xu氏Lufengosaurus, the 26-meter-long Jingyan Mamenchisaurus, the delicate Velociraptor, the soaring Pterosaur, and the ocean-ruling Ichthyosaurus, among various other dinosaur skeletons.

In other basic exhibitions, visitors can see many fossils of extinct plants and animals, as well as many specimens and model pictures of plants and animals, such as the ancient Yellow River elephant. The被子plant fossil (which lived 145 million years ago) – the world’s first flower, Liaoning Ginkgo, allows visitors to understand the process of the origin, development, and extinction of life, and to feel the complex process of biological evolution.

In the ‘The Origin of Man’ exhibition hall, there are many specimens of human bones and organs, including the extremely rare ‘Lucy’ who lived 3.2 million years ago, the ‘Nariokotome Boy’ who lived 1.6 million years ago, and the ‘Neanderthal’ skeleton from 60,000 years ago. Visitors can gain a deep understanding of human anatomy here.

If you are with children, the ‘Exploration Corner’ in the museum is a must-visit. Here, visitors can freely read popular science books and fully exercise their imagination to draw what they have seen and heard in the natural history museum. In addition, the ‘Exploration Corner’ provides various biological models for visitors to assemble on their own.

The museum also has a free 4D cinema that shows several popular science films every day. The museum is open for free and requires advance reservation to enter. You need to book at least one day in advance and cannot book tickets for the same day. The museum is open all year round from Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-17:00; closed all day on Mondays; and open on New Year’s Day, Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Labor Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day, 09:00-17:00.
