The Capital Museum has seven floors and is mainly divided into exhibition halls such as basic exhibitions and special exhibitions. When visiting, there is no need to be limited to just a few cultural relics. By visiting the Capital Museum, one can understand the urban development history of Beijing as a 3,000-year-old ancient city and an 800-year-old capital city, as well as the local conditions, customs, and living habits of old Beijing. These are the highlights of the Capital Museum.

The basic exhibitions are the core exhibitions of the Capital Museum, including two parts: ‘Ancient Capital Beijing – History and Culture’ and ‘Old Stories of the Capital – Folk Customs Exhibition of Old Beijing’. ‘Ancient Capital Beijing – History and Culture’ is located on the second floor of the square exhibition hall of the museum. It uses cultural relics and pictures to show Beijing’s long journey from a northern border fortress to the capital of a dynasty and finally to the capital of New China.

‘Old Stories of the Capital – Folk Customs Exhibition of Old Beijing’ is located on the fifth floor of the square exhibition hall. This exhibition uses element symbols with Beijing folk customs characteristics – hutongs and quadrangles to reflect the theme of the exhibition. By displaying activities such as marriage, childbirth, and festivals among hutong neighbors, it shows the living customs and various etiquettes of old Beijingers in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China.

The Capital Museum also has various special exhibitions in different exhibition halls, including ‘Exhibition of Fine Ancient Jade Art’, ‘Exhibition of Fine Bronze Art of Yan Region’, ‘Exhibition of Cultural Relics of Ancient Beijing Pagodas’, etc. These exhibitions are a supplement to the display of Beijing culture. The locations of each special exhibition are clearly marked on the signage in the museum lobby.

The digital screening room is located on the first floor of the circular exhibition hall. Currently, high-definition digital films ‘Brilliant Beijing’ (with a running time of more than ten minutes) are played every day, presenting the brilliance of the ancient capital Beijing in a concise and clear way.

The Capital Museum building itself is also very distinctive. Inside the building, there are scenic spots and sketches such as a sunken bamboo forest courtyard and an ancient Chinese archway. The museum also has service facilities such as a coffee shop, restaurant, and bag storage area.

Advance reservation is required to visit the Capital Museum for free. However, prior reservation is necessary. Each person can reserve no more than five tickets each time. Tourists can collect tickets at the north gate of the museum (by presenting the reservation number or valid identification used during reservation) for visiting.
