Shenzhen Red Cube, as an important public cultural project in Longgang District, Shenzhen, is located in the core area of Longgang. Its service functions include a Science and Technology Museum, Youth Palace, and Public Art and Urban Planning Exhibition Hall.
The Longgang District Science and Technology Museum is curated based on the concept of ‘people’s cognition, exploration, transformation, and innovation of science and technology’, containing and reflecting the basic principles and methods of the field of science and technology, the paths of scientific exploration, and the development direction of future technology. The museum houses more than 300 exhibits, 80% of which are interactive, covering 80% of the basic science knowledge points in primary and secondary schools, and also including some cutting-edge technology content. A special scenario-based children’s science exploration area called Ideo Park is set up on the second floor for young children.
Considering the economic characteristics of Longgang’s high-tech industry concentration, interactive exhibits such as electronics and communication, new energy vehicles have been specially arranged. The Southern Institute of Space Science, located in Longgang District, has also specially designed and produced space stations and Mars bases for this museum, which is a unique example in domestic science and technology museum exhibitions.
The Longgang District Youth Palace adheres to the concept of ‘cultural heritage and quality education’. The Youth Palace is planned with three functions: one is the Longgang District Committee’s platform for youth extracurricular activities, including a youth demeanor exhibition area, multi-function hall, and broadcasting hall. The second is the Youth Palace exhibition area, which is specially designed with sports and exploration as themes for youth exploration areas, and has full-time teachers for guidance. Through these projects, it is hoped to stimulate the enthusiasm, will, and team spirit for active learning in cognition, experience, interest, and proficiency among young people. The third part is quality education, which has introduced a number of high-quality courses in Chinese studies, music, art, and sports from the industry.
The Longgang District Public Art Museum is academically positioned with ‘heritage and innovation’, striving to attract a wider range of art and fine arts, reflecting the innovative development of culture and art, and striving to let ordinary people enjoy culture, breaking away from the situation where high art is too high and few. The Art and Cultural Exchange Museum carries out related academic exhibitions and art activities in terms of cultural missions and art education. The Innovation Design Experience Museum reflects and displays the development rules of design art and classic design art works, including the World Design Art Collection Exhibition, the Chinese Design Art Innovation Exhibition, and the Longgang Intangible Cultural Heritage Experience Exhibition. Nearly 500 innovative works from artists and designers from the world, China, and Shenzhen Longgang have been selected to tell 50 little-known stories behind these works.
The Longgang Urban Planning Exhibition Hall showcases the achievements of Longgang since its establishment in 1993 in urban development, economic construction, social livelihood, and innovation.
The exhibition hall is divided into several exhibition areas, including the sand table interpretation, Impression Longgang, and the Take-off Longgang. It is structured around the concepts of ‘large-scale construction, transportation, education, culture, health, and commerce’ to showcase the natural, historical, and cultural characteristics of Longgang, highlighting the new urban concept of ‘surrounded by mountains and moistened by water’.
The hall also employs many domestic high technologies, such as the country’s largest multimedia all-digital sand table, planning evolution display carts, multi-layer transparent touch screens for special planning, and walk-in layered 30-image audio-visual experience areas, etc., to present to the public a new Longgang that is becoming a green, entrepreneurial, innovative, and lively urban area.
Operational hours are as follows: Closed all day on Mondays throughout the year; Open from 09:30 to 18:00 on Tuesdays to Thursdays throughout the year; Open from 09:30 to 21:30 on Fridays to Sundays throughout the year.
