Guyaju is a mysterious place in the valleys on the outskirts of Beijing. On both sides of a mountain gully less than 10 meters wide in the canyon, on the steep granite rock wall nearly 100,000 square meters away from the bottom of the valley, there are stone chambers of different sizes carved artificially. There are a total of 117 stone chambers, which are arranged in an orderly manner as if it were a natural village.

The stone chambers are generally 1.8 meters high and are rectangular or square. Most of them are three-room sets with one bright room and two dark rooms. All the stone chambers are distributed in layers, and there are stone steps, stone ladders and trestle bridges connecting the layers. There are many traces of human survival left in the stone chambers, such as doors, windows, closets, lampstands, stone kang beds, smoke exhaust ducts, stone stoves and mangers.

The stone chambers with kang beds are living rooms, and the kang beds are wide enough for two people; those with mangers are stables, which can generally accommodate four or five horses. Guyaju Cliff Dwelling is a relatively large cliff dwelling site in North China. Regarding its excavation age, purpose and historical background, some researchers think it is a place for garrison troops in ancient times, some say it is a military camp for soldiers at border passes, and some judge it as a hiding place for heroes on the rivers and lakes.

So far, there is no definite conclusion. Tourists may as well visit the site in person and make their own judgments based on what they see and gain.
