The Shimenli Scenic Area of Kunyu Mountain is located in the hinterland on the north side of Taiboding, the main peak of Kunyu Mountain. It contains three long, quiet and serene grand canyons. Inside the valleys, waterfalls hang and streams cascade, water flows rapidly. Ancient trees are twined and lush with branches and leaves. At the confluence of the valley entrance, it is flanked by two mountains in the east and west. High rocks and huge stones protrude and stack up, covering the mountain pass, like a door closed, so it is called ‘Shimen’ (Stone Gate). There are many ruins of Taoist temples and nunneries around Shimen. The Shenqingguan, the ancestral court of Quanzhen Taoism, is located near Shimen. Due to the obstruction of high mountains, the weather inside and outside Shimen is very different. Often, inside Shimen, there are heavy summer rains and flying winter snows, while outside Shimen, there is only a light mist and gloomy evening clouds. The two characters ‘Shimen’ handwritten by Master Qigong are engraved on the east cliff. The origin of the name ‘Shimen’ is bestowed by nature. According to local old people, there used to be two large stones standing side by side like lions. The middle passage was only wide enough for one person to walk sideways with a load on a shoulder. So locals call it Shimen. Later, when building a highway in 1961, the top and both sides of the gate were destroyed, resulting in its current appearance.
