Yantai was formerly known as Zhifu, precisely because of this island. Zhifu Island is surrounded by the sea on three sides and connected to the land in the south. It is a relatively large land-connected island in China and a typical one in the world. Looking down from the air, Zhifu Island is like a ganoderma lucidum growing in the vast Yellow Sea. There are jagged rocks and steep cliffs on the island, and the sea breeze is soughing. On Zhifu Island, two wonders can be observed: ‘Zhifu Sunrise’. When the sun rises abruptly from the vast waves, one can see the blue sea shining golden and multicolored. The scene is very spectacular.
Occasionally, the mirage wonder appears on the sea surface of Zhifu Island. Pavilions, terraces, and farmhouses give people a feeling of becoming immortals. The Yangzhu Temple on the sunny slope of Zhifu Island was probably built in the Spring and Autumn Period. It is one of the temples where the State of Qi worships the ‘Eight Divine Generals’ and also one of the oldest temples recorded in Chinese history. The temple has four courtyards and 136 halls arranged in a ‘工’-shaped layout. The architecture is magnificent and it is a typical layout of ancient oriental architecture.
