Zhaowentai is located within the Weishan Park in Wendeng, Weihai. It is said that during his eastern tour, Emperor Qin Shi Huang gathered scholars to ascend this mountain to discuss achievements and praise virtues, hence the name. To commemorate the Emperor’s visit, a platform was constructed during the Qi and Song dynasties, named ‘Zhaowentai’. During the Qing dynasty, in the reign of Emperor Qianlong, extensive construction took place, expanding the platform to unprecedented grandeur, leading to the saying, ‘Without visiting Zhaowentai, one has not truly seen Dengzhou Prefecture’. In 1940, Zhaowentai and other ancient buildings were destroyed by the Japanese invading forces. In 1992, these ancient buildings were reconstructed, including the front and back gates of Zhaowentai, stone archways, bell towers, and Wenxing Stone Pavilion. New additions included the ‘Wendeng Studies’ exhibition hall and the Qin Shi Huang wax figure hall, restoring the ancient charm and grandeur. Visitors flock here all year round, enjoying their time and feeling inspired by the saying, ‘Without visiting Zhaowentai, the trip to Wendeng is in vain’. Open all year round, accessible 24/7.
