The Mei Lanfang Memorial Hall, established in October 1986, is located at No. 9 Huguo Temple Street, Xicheng District, Beijing. It is a typical Beijing Siheyuan. Above the vermilion-painted gate hangs a plaque inscribed with ‘Mei Lanfang Memorial Hall’. Upon entering, a half-statue of Mei Lanfang greets visitors in front of a large screen wall made of bluestone bricks and tiles. In front of the small screen wall inside the door, there are four small round stone carvings with flowers and a white jade fish basin.
The east, west, and north rooms have corridors with red-painted pillars and bright painted decorations along the eaves. The courtyard features two persimmon trees and two crabapple trees, symbolizing ‘peace in all matters’. From 1951, the outstanding Peking Opera performer Mei Lanfang spent the last ten years of his life in this quiet and comfortable courtyard. The Mei Lanfang Memorial Hall is divided into two parts: the main courtyard preserves the original appearance of the residence, with the living room, study, bedroom, and living room furnishings displayed as they were when Mei Lanfang was alive. The east and west exhibition rooms feature thematic exhibitions, with content updated irregularly. The outer courtyard exhibition room presents a large number of precious images summarizing Mei Lanfang’s artistic and social activities throughout his life. The memorial hall includes departments such as the Comprehensive Office, Cultural Relics Protection Department, and Exhibition Propaganda Department. After Mei Lanfang’s death, his wife, Fu Zhifang, and their children donated a large collection of valuable opera materials and various documents to the state, which are now part of the Mei Lanfang Memorial Hall’s collection. The newly established Mei Lanfang Research Center will undertake the project of Mei Lanfang’s opera performance theory system, as well as the organization and construction of a database of literature and information. Opening hours are Tuesday-Sunday, 09:00-16:30; closed all day on Mondays; and during New Year’s Day, Qingming Festival, Labor Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day, 09:00-16:30, with a disinfection break from 11:30 to 12:30 during which entry is suspended.
