The Shijingshan District Stone Carving Museum, also known as the Tianyi Tomb, is referred to as the Cixiang Temple and Shi Xianglu Temple. It is located at the foot of Cuihu Mountain in Shijingshan District, Beijing, at No. 80 Modukou Street, approximately one mile north of Fahai Temple. It is the best-preserved, high-standard, and exquisitely carved tomb of a Ming Dynasty eunuch in the country, and also the first Ming-Qing eunuch tomb garden open to the public. It is now a district-level cultural relics protection unit.
The Tianyi Tomb is composed of three main parts: the tomb garden exhibition area, the eunuch culture exhibition room, and the field stone carving exhibition area. The tomb was built during the Ming Dynasty, and its owner, Tianyi, was a eunuch during the reigns of Emperor Jiajing, Longqing, and Wanli, holding the rank of fourth grade. The tomb area currently has five eunuch tombs, which are the most complete, largest in area, highest in standard, and most exquisitely carved eunuch tombs in China. Judging from the size of the Tianyi Tomb, the size and types of stone carvings have all exceeded the regulations, especially the octagonal shallow relief on the waist of the Huabiao Xumi seat, which not only proves the funeral customs of Ming Dynasty officials often exceeding the ritual system but also proves the power and arrogance of eunuchs in the Ming Dynasty. The underground palace of Tianyi Tomb has been robbed many times and was cleaned and renovated in May 1998. Two pieces of Nanmu wood and a box of tomb inscriptions were left in the tomb. It is the third underground tomb in the Beijing area after the Dingling of the Ming Tombs and the Western Han Tomb in Dabaotai for visitors to tour. The three stele pavilions in the tomb garden exhibition area were renovated last year. Opening hours are all year round from Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-16:30; closed all day on Mondays; and open on New Year’s Day, Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Labor Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day, 09:00-16:30.
