In the past, Lu You wrote the famous “Phoenix Hairpin” to recall his encounter with Tang Wan in Shen Garden, endowing this exquisite Jiangnan garden with many romantic imaginations. Nowadays, when people come to Shen Garden, in addition to appreciating the classical garden, more are here to feel love and even regard this place as a sustenance for persistent love. The opening hours of Shen Garden are divided into two sessions, day and night. During the day, people mainly view the buildings in the garden. Although the buildings of Shen Garden in the Song Dynasty no longer exist, the Shen Garden we see today is rebuilt and expanded on the original site according to the layout of that time in recent decades. However, this does not prevent people from coming to Shen Garden to feel love. Nowadays, Shen Garden is divided into three parts: the ancient site area, the East Garden and the South Garden. The scenic area is not large and can be toured in about 2 hours on foot. Among them, the ancient site area is the key point of the tour. If you are a theater fan, then the Shen Garden Night Show will be more to your taste. Entering Shen Garden is the ancient site area. Immediately, you will see a piece of Taihu stone with the words “Poetic Realm” on it, and you can start your tour from here. On the left is a corridor. There are many inscriptions of poems on the wall. Wind chimes are hung under the eaves, and the small wooden plaques are full of messages written by lovers. Walking in the garden along the path, passing by the Plum Appreciation Threshold and the Bayong Tower, you come to the Well Pavilion of the Six Dynasties. This well and the adjacent gourd-shaped pool are the only relics of the Six Dynasties in the garden. The Solitary Crane Pavilion next to the pavilion is the center of Shen Garden. To its south is the famous stele of “Phoenix Hairpin”. Tourists who come here will all stop here, recite a few lines of “Phoenix Hairpin” and savor the love between Lu You and Tang Wan. The Shuanggui Hall to the east of the Solitary Crane Pavilion is the place for the evening performance in Shen Garden. Near its entrance are the entrances to the South Garden and the East Garden. The South Garden is the Lianli Garden and the Lu You Memorial Hall. There is no melancholic temperament of the ancient site area here. Instead, there is more of a scholarly air. The Lu You Memorial Hall exhibits steles and tablets of Lu You’s poetry manuscripts and a panoramic model of Shen Garden. The East Garden to the east is themed on love and is also called “Love Garden”. There are historical and legendary landscapes full of love implications such as the heart-shaped Qiongyao Pond, Magpie Bridge and Seal Hall, which are very suitable for couples to stroll around. The special feature of Shen Garden lies in its night tour. The garden at night is a bit more romantic and mysterious than during the day. Among them, the evening performance in Shuanggui Hall is worth seeing. You can not only see actors performing “Phoenix Hairpin” in a modern form and telling the story of Lu You and Tang Wan anew, but also hear various local operas in Shaoxing, including Yingge Troupe and Lianhualao, etc. It is very wonderful. Shen Garden is only about 200 meters away from Lu Xun’s Former Residence. If you only want to tour the garden, you can visit both in the daytime. Or visiting Lu Xun’s Former Residence during the day and coming to Shen Garden to enjoy the performance at night is also a good choice. Opening hours: open all year round from 08:00 to 17:00.
