One of the well-preserved princely mansions in Beijing, this grand courtyard was once home to Nalan Mingzhu, a powerful minister in the Kangxi dynasty, and his son, the renowned poet Nalan Xingde, who penned the famous line, ‘If life were only as beautiful as when we first met, why would the autumn wind sigh over a painted fan?’

During the late Qing period, Prince Chun, Aisin-Gioro Yi Xin, also moved to this residence. His son was the young Emperor Guangxu, who had a tumultuous fate. Yi Xin originally had another princely mansion, but after Guangxu’s ascension, the place where he lived as a child became the emperor’s secret residence, where even his own father could not reside, leading Yi Xin to move to this location.
