Lanman Hutong is located in the south of Beijing City. It starts from Nanheng West Street in the south and reaches Guangnei Street in the north. It can be regarded as a large hutong in the south of the city. Lanman Hutong was formerly known as ‘Lannian Hutong’. Zhao Jishi of the Qing Dynasty mentioned in ‘Jiyuan Jisuoji’: ‘In February in the capital, the ditches are dredged, and the foul smell is offensive.
Lannian Hutong is especially so. It is two zhang deep and wide. When it is opened, carriages and horses cannot pass through…’. According to research, this hutong was the moat from the Five Dynasties to the Liao Dynasty. In the late Qing Dynasty, it was renamed the more elegant ‘Lanman Hutong’. Counting from north to south in the hutong, there used to be Hunan Guild Hall, Hanzhong Guild Hall, Xiangjiang Guild Hall, Dongguan Guild Hall, and Changshu Guild Hall. Now only the Hunan Guild Hall is still preserved. There is a Lianhua Temple built in the Ming Dynasty in the hutong. Only one courtyard remains. Hong Liangji, a scholar of Sinology in the Qing Dynasty, lived here when he was exiled for punishment. At the beginning of the 20th century, scholar and painter Yao Mangfu lived here for a long time. The hutong almost adjacent to the Hunan Guild Hall is Nanbanjie Hutong. Mr. Lu Xun lived there for seven years. The famous ‘Diary of a Madman’ was born here.
