Xuanwu Lake, historically known as Sangpo and Houhu, is located at the foot of Zhongshan Mountain and is one of China’s larger imperial garden lakes. It is renowned as one of the ‘Three Famous Lakes of the South of the Yangtze River’ along with Nanhu in Jiaxing and West Lake in Hangzhou. The lake is divided into five islets, each showcasing numerous historical sites and is now a famous cultural and leisure park in Nanjing.
Upon exiting Nanjing Railway Station, the south side is Huanhu Road, where one can take a leisurely walk around the lake to enjoy the scenery of Xuanwu Lake. In summer, visitors can witness vast areas of blooming lotus flowers, creating a lush green expanse on the water surface, which is particularly enchanting. On the south bank of the lake, there is a section of the Ming Dynasty city wall (where the Ming City Wall History Museum is located), offering a unique perspective for lake viewing.
Visitors can rent paddle boats or electric boats to tour the lake, enjoying the views of the islets and the surrounding urban scenery, which is quite delightful. To fully appreciate the beauty of Xuanwu Lake, one must walk on the islets and explore at a leisurely pace. The islets are connected by bridges and causeways, allowing for easy movement between them.
In spring, visiting Yingzhou offers a view of cherry blossoms adorning the branches, and there is also a lotus garden, making it an excellent spot for viewing lotus flowers and taking photos. When in Huanzhou, one can admire the rockery waterfalls; numerous Taihu rockery stones are uniquely shaped, with the ‘Child Worshipping Guanyin’ stone resembling a child praying to Guanyin, inviting further exploration. On the northwestern hill of Huanzhou, there is Guopu Mound, the highest point within the lake area.
On Lingzhou, one can gaze at the scenery of Zhongshan and Xiaojiuhua Mountain from the Tai Ling Flower Trellis. Liangzhou boasts bonsai gardens, azalea gardens, and Lan Sheng Tower among other attractions. In Cuizhou, the area is filled with pine, cypress, bamboo, and willow, creating a lush green environment that is perfect for relaxation.
Additionally, to the east of Xuanwu Lake, there is a Lover’s Garden featuring tulips, peach blossoms, and other plants, with a pleasant scenery often seen as a backdrop for wedding photoshoots. The park is open all year round, 24 hours a day. Facilities include a nursing room located near the restrooms.
