Wukang Road is located in Xuhui District, Shanghai. Originally named Ferguson Road, it is named after American missionary John Calvin Ferguson. Wukang Road connects the busy Middle Huaihai Road in the north and the secluded Huashan Road in the south. It is a ‘Famous Chinese Historical and Cultural Street’ with 37 historical buildings. Among them, there are 14 excellent historical buildings. It is truly a ‘road of celebrities’.
Strolling on this old road with a history of a hundred years, the ancient trees on both sides are lush and green. From time to time, European-style buildings scattered on the roadside can be seen. Wukang Building is the landmark building of Wukang Road. It is designed by the famous Hungarian architect Laszlo Hudec. The red brick walls of the whole building, the corner balconies, and the triangular classical gable window lintels have the charm of the French Renaissance. The shape of Wukang Building is like a giant ship waiting to set sail. So it is not difficult to understand the origin of its old name ‘Normandie Apartments’. Film artists such as Wu Yin, Zheng Junli, and Zhao Dan once lived here. Miss Kong Er, the daughter of Kong Xiangxi, is now the largest owner here. One after another celebrity former residences are a major feature of Wukang Road. No. 113 is the former residence of Ba Jin, a literary giant. The quiet and warm former residence is the last place where Ba Jin lived in Shanghai and for a relatively long time. No. 393 is the former residence of Huang Xing, a British country-style garden house. No. 1, Lane 40 is the former residence of Tang Shaoyi. It is a Spanish-style independent garden house, retro and grand… In addition to celebrity former residences, there are other characteristic old western-style houses. No. 390 is the office building of SAIC. The small Mediterranean-style house with a red roof and white walls has a different style from other old western-style houses. No. 99 is the old house of Zheng Guanghe. This independent western-style house has a towering spire. It looks precious and mysterious under the cover of white high walls and green branches. The movie ‘Lust, Caution’ was filmed here. If you want to savor the past and present of Wukang Road carefully, it may take a whole day. There are also many coffee shops and restaurants here for rest. Wukangting at No. 376 is surrounded by three old western-style houses. Among the clusters of flowers, a restaurant called Coffee Tree is very popular. Ordering a vegetable panini with a cup of fragrant coffee is very satisfying. The Farine Cafe at No. 378 is filled with a simple French country flavor. The croissants here are known as ‘the best croissants in Shanghai’. Open all year round, open all day.Wukang Road
