The Six Dynasties Museum

The Nanjing Six Dynasties Museum is located on the east side of the Nanjing Presidential Palace, at the intersection of Changjiang Road and Hanfu Street. From the basement floor to the third floor on the east and north sides is the museum. During the Six Dynasties period, Nanjing was the world’s first city with a population exceeding one million. It is known as one of the two major centers of classical civilization in the world together with ancient Rome.

The rammed earth wall ruins of the Six Dynasties are on the basement floor. There is a section of Six Dynasties rammed earth wall ruins 25 meters long and 10 meters wide. This is the root of the entire museum. In 2008, when archaeologists excavated the land where the museum is located, they found this rammed earth wall at a depth of 2 meters underground. After research, it is identified as the architectural ruins of the Jiankang Palace City of the Six Dynasties 1700 years ago.

It is precisely because of the unearthed ruins of this millennium that there is today’s Six Dynasties Museum. The core theme of the exhibition ‘Eternal Elegance’ of the Six Dynasties Museum is to show the style of the ‘Oriental metropolis’. There are four exhibitions: ‘Capital of the Six Dynasties’, ‘Eternal Elegance’, ‘Elegance of the Six Dynasties’, and ‘Outstanding Figures of the Six Dynasties’.

On the first floor, there is also a special exhibition of cultural relics on the theme of ‘Eternal Elegance – Stories of Figures in the Three Kingdoms Period’, gathering more than 60 sets of cultural relics on the theme of stories of figures in the Three Kingdoms from six museums including Nanjing Museum, Suzhou Museum, and Zhenjiang Museum. The types include calligraphy and painting, porcelain, clay sculpture, shadow puppetry, and wood carving.

In the exhibition hall of ‘Elegance of the Six Dynasties’ on the second floor of the museum, a large number of precious cultural relics from the Six Dynasties period are on display, including pottery figurines, celadon, epitaphs, eaves tiles, and stone carvings. Among them are male and female pottery figurines dancing. And the patterns on the eaves tiles that look like smiling faces are also very delightful.
