The new Yinxu Museum officially opened on February 26, 2024 (the 17th day of the first lunar month). The museum is located on the banks of the Huan River, facing the Yinxu Palace and Ancestral Temple Ruins across the river. In terms of architectural design, after a global solicitation and selection process, the new museum adopted the design scheme by He Jingtang, an academician of South China University of Technology. Drawing inspiration from the ‘Book of Songs – Shang Song’, the design features green fields, tripods standing on the earth, layered profundity, and bronze wrapping, embodying a green, low-carbon, and sustainable development model, creating a ‘Chinese Paradigm and Sanctuary of Civilization’ with cultural connotations and archaeological significance of the Yinxu site.
Regarding the exhibition layout, it focuses on the theme of ‘The Great Shang Civilization’, featuring 3 basic displays, 4 special exhibitions, and 1 unique immersive digital exhibition. It comprehensively interprets the prosperous urban civilization, well-developed ceremonial civilization, advanced bronze civilization, brilliant writing civilization, and superb handicraft technology of the Shang Dynasty from multiple perspectives, including Shang history, oracle bone studies, archaeological history, and the global dissemination of Shang civilization. It vividly presents the significant position and role of Shang civilization in the development history of Chinese civilization and human civilization.
In terms of formal design, the museum adheres to the principles of solemnity and grandeur, widely applying artificial intelligence, multimedia, and other digital technologies to provide new forms of expression for cultural relics, documents, and oracle bone inscriptions. This enhances the breadth, depth, and precision of the panoramic display of the Shang civilization, constructing an interactive space between cultural relics, history, and digital virtual spaces.
The museum is open all year round from 08:30 to 17:30; during the National Day holiday, it is open from 08:30 to 20:30.
