Kaiyuan Temple

Located on the west side of Changsheng Street in Zhengding. Originally named Jingguan Temple, it was first built in the second year of Xinghe in the Eastern Wei Dynasty (540). In the tenth year of Kaihuang in the Sui Dynasty (591), it was renamed Jiehui Temple. In 2738 (the 26th year of Kaiyuan in the Tang Dynasty), it was renamed as it is now by imperial decree. The existing buildings are in a distinct Tang Dynasty style.

Different from the layout of other temples, Kaiyuan Temple does not adopt a symmetrical layout. Instead, the tower and the bell tower stand side by side. In the late Qing Dynasty, due to long-term disrepair, the temple was abandoned and only the bell tower and Xumi Tower remained. Bell Tower: One of the wooden bell towers with an earlier existing age in Hebei Province and also one of the earlier ones in the north.

There is a bronze bell hanging in the bell tower, which is 2.9 meters high, 1.56 meters in diameter and 15 centimeters thick. With a simple shape, it is a relic of the Tang Dynasty. The bell tower is a two-story pavilion-style building with a brick-wood structure and a square plane. It has three bays in width and depth respectively, with a construction area of 135 square meters. It has a single-eaved hip roof covered with green tiles and a total height of 14 meters.

Its large wooden structure, column grid and dougong all show the architectural art style of the Tang Dynasty. Even a considerable part of the wooden components on the upper floor still maintain the original appearance of the Tang Dynasty. The bell tower is a two-story pavilion and can be climbed up, but the steps are really very steep. On the second floor, you can see the wooden structure of the roof and that big bell.

There are also wind chimes hanging at the four corners of the eaves of the bell tower. Like several other temples in Zhengding, the clapper of the wind chime here is also in a four-petal heart shape, which is very beautiful.

Opening hours: Open all year round from 8:30 to 16:00.
