Shangqiu Museum, the first museum in China to showcase the history and civilization of the Shang culture, is also known as the ‘Chinese Shang Culture Museum’. It is a large-scale comprehensive museum that fully displays the ancient and modern civilization history of Shangqiu city. Located 1.5 kilometers southwest of Shangqiu Ancient City in Suiyang District, Shangqiu City, Henan Province, it is adjacent to the Huashan Cultural Heritage Theme Park to the west and faces Huashan Avenue to the south.
Shangqiu Museum was established in October 1983. The old museum was demolished in 2004, and the new museum was founded in December 2009. Construction began in 2010 and took six years to complete. The trial opening was on May 18, 2016, and the official opening was on June 6, 2016. The new museum covers a total area of 74,000 square meters (approximately 110.4 acres), with a total construction area of 29,672 square meters. It houses a collection of 20,000 cultural relics, most of which were unearthed from field archaeology in the Shangqiu region or collected from the public. Upon entering Shangqiu Museum, visitors first ascend the grand staircase and ramp facing Huashan Avenue to reach the embankment, and then cross the large bridge over the water to enter the museum’s preface hall. Standing in the hall, one can overlook the 12-meter-high preface hall’s background wall, experiencing the mystery, depth, and antiquity of Chinese Shang culture history, which began with the ‘Xuanniao Sheng Shang’.
