Pichaiyuan is located in Zhongshan Road Commercial Street and is a famous snack street in Qingdao. In this small-scale block, there are various large stall-style restaurants everywhere. You can taste relatively authentic Qingdao cuisine. Among them, tofu pudding, stinky tofu of the national football team, Qingdao old yogurt, pot stickers, grilled squid, etc. are quite popular. At first, there were randomly built shabby plank houses ‘firewood houses’ everywhere. In 1902, after Germany occupied Qingdao, Jiangning Road was built in Pichaiyuan and several large courtyards were built. Later, it had all kinds of entertainment and food, and developed into an early entertainment center and food street in Qingdao. The streets of Pichaiyuan are in the shape of a ‘人’ character. The main street extends from Zhongshan Road to Hebei Road. There are old houses on both sides of the road, which form a sharp contrast with the surrounding high-rise buildings. Entering Pichaiyuan from Zhongshan Road, you can see a beautiful gate tower, a bit like the gate tower of a Shikumen alley in Shanghai. There are words ‘Pichaiyuan’ and ‘1902’ on it. On the back of the gate tower, there are colorful figures painted. Passing through a very small doorway and walking into the narrow street, there are various large stall-style restaurants lined up on both sides, mainly serving seafood and barbecue. At No. 10 Jiangning Road, there is Jiangning Guild Hall. It is said that in the early days, Pichaiyuan only referred to it, so it is also called ‘Old Pichaiyuan’. There is a stage in the hall. Basically, there are traditional opera performances such as Peking Opera and Lu Opera every noon and evening. When there is no performance, the large screen on the stage will also play cross talk. You can eat and watch plays here. The Chinese cross talk master Ma Sanli once set up a stall here. Now you can still see the statue of Ma Sanli in the guild hall. In fact, many artists have come out from here, including Liu Taiqing, a Xiqin drum actor, and Ge Zhaohong, a storytelling artist. In addition, there are many craftsmen in Pichaiyuan who are busy making various items, such as maltose of different shapes, carved gourds, dough figurines, etc., all of which are very worthy of appreciation.

Must-see tips: Ask about the price before eating anything. Also ask about the price of tea and napkins, otherwise it is easy to be cheated. Generally, you can bargain for food.
