Mingxia Cave is located on the mountainside of Kunlun Mountain in the south of Laoshan. Climbing up the steps from the foot of the mountain, along a secluded forest-lined path for about 1 kilometer, one can reach the cave entrance. One can also take the Taiqing cableway to ascend rapidly. This cave was excavated during the Dading period of the Jin Dynasty. The three characters ‘Mingxia Cave’ on the cave entrance were inscribed by the calligrapher Wang Xu in the Qing Dynasty. It is said that the original cave was tall and spacious. In the Ming Dynasty, the Taoist Sun Ziyang once practiced meditation here. During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, it was struck by lightning and most of it sank underground. The huge rock to the east of the cave still exists, with the inscription ‘Half of the sky is rosy clouds’. The flat cliff in front of the cave is like a platform. From here, one can overlook the vast sea; looking down at the cliff below, there are crisscross ravines. This is how the scenic spot of Laoshan, ‘Rosy clouds scattering in the sky’, is. Open all year round and all day.
