The ancient county yamen of Jimo is located to the north of Jimo City Museum. It was initially built by Dong Shouzhong, the county magistrate in the late Yuan Dynasty. Since the city was relocated and the yamen was established in 596 AD (the sixteenth year of Kaihuang in the Sui Dynasty), it has a history of more than 1,400 years. It is the only old county yamen with three halls that can be seen in Shandong Province.

After more than 10 renovations and expansions in the Ming and Qing dynasties, a complete county yamen building complex was gradually formed. The first hall, namely the main hall, or called ‘grand hall’ and ‘public hall’, is a place for litigation and interrogation. Behind the main hall is the second hall, once named ‘Yin Hall’, ‘Playing the Zither’ and ‘Reaching Far’. It is a place for discussing affairs, handling official business and receiving guests.

Further back is the third hall, which is the main living quarters for the county magistrate and his family. After renovation, the main hall is simple and elegant, majestic and solemn. Against the backdrop of a group of ancient cypresses, it regains its former glory and adds a major landscape to the ancient city of Jimo. It also leaves a meaningful historical building for future generations. In particular, the ‘underground treasury’ discovered in the original site of the west wing room is not seen in other county yamen.

This discovery has lifted a corner of the mysterious veil of this ancient county yamen that has been covered with a thousand years of history. Opening hours: Open from 09:00 to 17:20 all year round. The specific business status is subject to the opening situation on that day.
