Located in Xinglong Street, Shaoguan City, originally named Da Fan Temple, it was first established in the fifth year of the Tang Dynasty’s Xianqing period (AD 660) and has a history of over 1300 years.
After receiving the Dharma at Dongshan in Huangmei, Hubei, the Sixth Patriarch Huineng returned to Baolin Temple in Caoxi (now Nanhua Zen Temple in Qujiang County) and was invited multiple times to preach at Da Fan Temple. In the first year of the Tang Dynasty’s Wansui Tongtian period (AD 696), Empress Wu Zetian specially bestowed a crystal bowl and a fine robe upon Huineng. After the Sixth Patriarch’s passing, Emperor Zhongzong of Tang posthumously honored him as the Great Mirror Zen Master. During the Song Dynasty, Da Fan Temple was renamed Chongning Temple and Tianning Temple. To commemorate the Sixth Patriarch, it was renamed Da Jian Temple. Over the course of time and amidst wars and turmoil, Da Jian Temple experienced periods of rise and decline. In 1985, the Shaoguan Da Jian Temple Preparatory Committee was established by the government. After several efforts, they successively renovated the Mahavira Hall, the Hall of Merit, the dining hall, the guesthouse, and the monks’ dormitories, and re-sculpted the Buddha Shakyamuni, the Medicine Buddha, Amitabha Buddha, and the Guanyin Bodhisattva, among other Buddha statues. In 1994, a grand consecration ceremony was held at Da Jian Temple. The temple is open from January 1st to December 31st, from 09:00 to 16:00.Da Jian Zen Temple
