The millennium-old Baoning Temple is located on the shore of Jiuxian Lake in the Jiuxian Lake Scenic Area, in Baoning Village, Huangfengqiao Town. Baoning Temple was founded in the 10th year of Tianbao in the Tang Dynasty, that is, 751 AD. It is one of the earliest Buddhist meditation temples in Hunan. Baoning Temple is the ancestral court of the Caodong Sect of the southern school of Buddhism. From the Tang and Five Dynasties to the Song and Yuan Dynasties, the incense in Baoning Temple has been very prosperous and has become a famous temple in Hunan and the communication center between Nanyue of Buddhism and the two systems of Jiangxi.

The existing temple halls of Baoning Temple are in the pattern restored in the second year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty. There are three entrances in total, with a total of 24 halls, halls, buildings, pavilions, and terraces. Baoning Temple enjoys a high reputation and status in the history of Chinese Buddhism. The saying ‘North has Shaolin, south has Baoning’ is popular in the Chinese Buddhist community.

Wu Limin, a generation of Buddhist master, evaluates Baoning Temple as a ‘national treasure’. Open all year round, open all day. The opening hours of internal scenic spots are subject to the on-site announcements of the scenic area.
