The Elder Peak Scenic Area has an altitude of about 400 meters. Compared with many famous mountains, it is neither extremely high nor large. However, it combines the wonders of Mount Huangshan, the peril of Mount Huashan, and the beauty of Guilin. It has the characteristics of one peril, two wonders, and three beauties. The scenic area is divided into upper, middle, and lower levels. The upper level features three peaks towering. The middle level is dominated by Biechuan Temple. The lower level centers around Jinshi Rock. More than three hundred years ago, when Monk Dangui opened Biechuan Temple in Danxia Mountain, he picked out 12 landscapes and named them the Twelve Scenic Spots of Danxia: the sound of brook at Jinshui, the refreshing air at Yutai, the morning bell of Jiege, the iron cable of Danti, the morning glow at Duoshi, the misty rain at Zhupo, the green lotus in double ponds, the floating tower on the summit, the greenery embraced by Hongqiao, and the autumn moon on the scales.
