Beijing Wenyu River Park

Beijing Wenyu River Park is located in the northeastern part of Beijing’s central urban area, at the junction of Chaoyang, Shunyi, and Changping districts, where the Wenyu River and Qing River converge, upstream of the city’s sub-center, with a planned area of 30 square kilometers, making it one of the largest ‘green lungs’ in Beijing. It integrates ecological conservation, habitat restoration, and flood storage functions, while also accommodating diverse functions such as culture, leisure, and sports, forming a large-scale ecological space with interwoven blue and green, forest and water dependence, biodiversity, and ecological benefits for the public, striving to become the ‘golden business card’ of the capital’s ecological civilization construction.

The demonstration area of Beijing Wenyu River Park covers an area of 2.04 square kilometers and was the first to start construction in early 2019, focusing on six major aspects: forests, water, environment, intelligence, park, and soil to demonstrate its exemplary nature. The spatial planning is divided into ‘one axis, one vein, five areas’, and according to the forest and water style, it is divided into five areas: Forest Valley Area, Terrace Wetland Area, Flower Stream Brocade Field Area, Vital East Lake Area, and Adventure Forest Area; the park is distributed with ten major attractions including Flower Stream Brocade Field, Jade Lake, Quhe River, Waterfall Cascades, Reeds Reflecting Water, Yunshang Terraced Fields, Pine Cloud Canopy, Sunshine Beach, Niaowu, and Linglong Moon Viewing.

Flower Stream Brocade Field, one of the ten major attractions of Beijing Wenyu River Park, is located in the east park of the park. The total area of Flower Stream Brocade Field is about 8 hectares, composed of crisscross colorful flower fields, winding Dongyou Yunjia, and antique flower field wharves, which are spectacular. The paths are winding and interesting, with vegetables and fruits arranged in height, making it seem like a ‘garden away from the world’. Here, the fragrance of vegetables and the abundance of fruits make it a fashionable check-in place in the park and an indispensable scenery for autumn outings in the suburbs of Beijing.

Jade Lake, located in the east park of Beijing Wenyu River Park, is one of the park’s ten major attractions. The total area of Jade Lake is about 21 hectares, used for flood storage during the flood season and for sightseeing at other times. The park has created a dynamic leisure attraction around the lake with ‘one waterfront tour line, one willow bank long dike, and multiple waterfront nodes’, becoming a must-experience place for tourists to enjoy nature and water views.

On the lakeside avenue, the elderly stroll leisurely, parents spend time with their children, and couples walk here to enjoy a romantic and leisurely atmosphere. Lakeside buildings add to the scenery, with convenient signage; the garden path is covered with shade, and the scenery changes with every step; the waterfront loop is comfortable and tranquil; overall, it shapes an ecological scenic area with clear water, green banks, pleasant scenery, diverse vitality, and enjoyment of nature.

Quhe River, one of the ten major attractions of Beijing Wenyu River Park, is a river that restores a natural stream through water treatment and garden construction, carrying multiple functions such as water purification, riverbank play, and tent camping. Quhe River highlights the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature. The twists and turns of Quhe River not only enrich the visitor’s experience and increase spatial changes but also create more aquatic and terrestrial ecological interfaces, revitalizing the entire eastern forest’s habitat system.

Nowadays, in the Quhe River, there are flocks of wild ducks and geese. Birds such as egrets, herons and magpies draw water in the river, full of vitality. Walking along the Quhe River, the river is rippling with blue waves, and the forests on both banks are verdant. It is like ‘people are touring in a painting’, enjoying the vivid picture of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature everywhere.

Cascading Waterfalls and Lush Greenery: ‘Cascading waterfalls and lush greenery surround Wenyu River. The picturesque scenery awaits your arrival.’ Cascading Waterfalls and Lush Greenery is one of the ten scenic spots in Beijing Wenyu River Park. It is also the source of living water in the demonstration area and a unique water landscape. It is a cool place to check in in hot summer. Cascading Waterfalls and Lush Greenery is a multi-level landscape composed of a large waterfall on one layer and multiple small cascading waterfalls on multiple layers.

The large waterfall has a height difference of 7 meters. The waterfall landscape is combined vertically and horizontally with rich levels. Under the waterfall, there is a trestle bridge for close viewing. Visitors can feel the splashing water, hear the gurgling sound of flowing water. Surrounded by mist, it is like a fairyland, giving people a refreshing and pleasant feeling. Above the large waterfall are layers of small waterfalls.

Behind it, the dense forest is lush and green. There are many big trees on the islands in the water. The koi in the water are free. It is like a forest secret realm, cool and comfortable. Standing on the top of the cascading waterfalls and looking north, the water of the waterfalls and the water of the wetland in the park are connected into one piece, layer upon layer, undulating, forming a large-scale ecological space where forests and water flourish and blue and green are intertwined.

The best viewing time of the waterfalls is from 9:00 to 11:00 in the morning and from 4:00 to 6:00 in the afternoon.

Yunshang Terraced Fields: Yunshang Terraced Fields are more than 20 meters high. It is the scenic spot with the highest terrain in the demonstration area of Beijing Wenyu River Park. The terraced fields are layered. Walking up along the field path is like climbing a ladder into the clouds. Yunshang Terraced Fields can provide tourists with a place to experience traditional agricultural cultivation and have important ecological education significance.

At the commanding height of the terraced fields, there is an observation deck named ‘Wangyuntai’, which has a beautiful implication of cultivation and harvest. Standing on Wangyuntai, you can not only have a panoramic view of the beautiful scenery of the terraced fields, but also overlook the natural landscapes and urban beauty in the distance. Looking east, the mountains, waters, forests, fields, lakes and grasses in Wenyu River Park flourish together, presenting a magnificent scene.

Looking west, the Qinghe River, where forests and water depend on each other, flows through. Looking south, nearby is the Cascading Waterfalls and Lush Greenery, and in the distance are urban beauties such as Wangjing SOHO and Tiantongyuan. Looking north, the undulating Beishan Mountain and the vibrant Future Science City at the foot of Beishan Mountain stand between heaven and earth. It can be said that it has unlimited scenery in 360 degrees.

Sunshine Beach: Sunshine Beach is the gold business card of Beijing Wenyu River Park and also a beach recreation place. Sunshine Beach, Fengming Terrace and Feifeng Valley are connected into a whole, forming a natural landscape axis, creating three vivid landscape pictures of phoenix singing on a high hill, phoenix flying in a flower valley and sunshine on the beach, which give people room for reverie. Sunshine Beach covers an area of about more than 3,000 square meters, and the coastline extends for hundreds of meters.

Backed by the Western Hills and facing the Qin Lake in the east, it offers a poetic experience of ‘facing the sea, with spring blossoms’. It is a place of peace and tranquility in the morning and evening twilight! The Qin Lake has a wide expanse of water and diverse scenery. In spring and summer, the breeze ripples and the water surface is calm and very cool. In autumn, the grass and trees turn slightly yellow and the water is shimmering.

In winter, it is as pure as ice and jade, like a mirror inverted between heaven and earth. The Sunshine Beach is a place to experience the beauty of Qin Lake up close and in multiple time and space. Playing with sand, getting close to water, and viewing the lake are all places for leisure and entertainment. Linglong Wangyue Walking north along the Qin Lake, you can encounter a quiet, peaceful, and relaxing place.

This is the scenic spot of Linglong Wangyue. ‘Linglong Wangyue’ is one of the core scenic spots in the demonstration area of Beijing Wenyu River Park. It is a small and exquisite island on the north bank of Qin Lake and a bridge connecting the Forest Music Valley area and the wetland landscape area. Linglong Wangyue is backed by secluded mountains and forests in the north and faces the wide water surface in the south.

Because its island shape is like the moon and jade, small and exquisite, and open on three sides, it is suitable for enjoying the moon, hence its name ‘Linglong Wangyue’. ‘Linglong Wangyue’ is designed according to local conditions and layout following the terrain, carrying forward the advantages of classical gardens. The space is progressive in layers, giving tourists a feeling of looping back and forth.

The original appearance of the site was high piles of muck and uneven. In the rainy season, it was easy to form puddles. The puddles were utilized to create a landscape pool. Volcanic rocks are stacked in the pool to purify the water quality. An island is built in the water, forming a layout of ‘island in the lake, pool in the island, and island in the pool again’. Approaching this mysterious island, to the south is a visual corridor several kilometers long.

Looking over the lake, you can clearly see the wetland Tori House hundreds of meters away. Looking further, you can vaguely see the urban skyline composed of buildings such as China Zun and Wangjing SOHO. Tori House Tori House is one of the highest points in the West Garden. It is an ecological bird-watching tower with a novel and refined architectural form, providing a place for tourists to ascend the tower and look far.

Here, you can watch birds, view the lake, and view the garden to your heart’s content, truly experiencing the tranquility and freedom of ‘sunset clouds fly with solitary ducks, and autumn waters merge with the sky in one color’. In the future, through the conservation of wetland water systems, a large number of migratory birds will settle down in the reed marshes. Standing on the Tori House, you can watch the spectacular scene of birds perching.

At that time, Tori House will also undertake more and more functions such as leisure and nature education, enabling citizens to enjoy the natural beauty from multiple angles and in all directions. Wuliu Viewing Lake Wuliu Viewing Lake is the core scenic spot in the eastern area of the park. ‘Wuliu’ is taken from the meaning of ‘five willows at Chaisang Residence, three poplars at Baixia Pavilion. There is nothing to do when coming and going, and one can always see the greenness.

‘ On the south side of the jade lake, there are shady trees and rows of willows. On the wide-view and flat observation deck, the beautiful scenery of the jade lake is all in sight. The green trees on the lakeside avenue and the clear lake water complement each other, presenting a beautiful scene of willows coming alive because of the lake and the lake being spiritual because of the willows, jointly constituting a pleasant scenery of the lakeside loop.

The Wuliu Lake Viewing Spot is an important part of the park’s creation of ‘a waterfront tourist route, a long willow embankment, and multiple waterfront nodes’ around Yuhu Lake. Meadow Beauty Meadow Beauty is located near Gate 3 of the east garden of the Chaoyang Demonstration Area of Beijing Wenyu River Park. It is an ecological space where forests and grasses coexist, reeds are dense, and the path is secluded.

The paths for pedestrians combined with grasslands and reed marshes together form the charming scenery here. Behind the reed marshes is a wide and soft lawn, like laying a layer of green carpet on the earth. This is one of the areas planned by the park for tent camping activities. Meadow Beauty at night has a different scene. Tourists can look up at the starry sky here and feel the unique charm of nature.
