Yangti Ridge’s peak resembles the shape of star fruit slices, which was known as ‘Star Fruit Ridge’ before the Ming Dynasty. Due to its high and steep terrain, as well as the treacherous path, it also resembles a sheep’s hoof, hence the name ‘Yangti Ridge’ in the Qing Dynasty. This ridge was an important official road for ancient eastern Guangdong counties to connect Huizhou and Guangzhou.
As recorded in the ‘Rebuilding the Yangti Ridge Temple Inscription’: ‘The ridge is steep, winding for dozens of miles, climbing and pouring aside, making people dizzy and shrinking their steps. In cold weather, the sea breeze blows, making the hat fly; in hot weather, sweat pours down, wetting the rocks.’
There are also records in the ‘Moving the Yangti Ridge Temple Inscription’ that describe it as ‘winding and steep, looking at the clouds,’ and ‘surrounded by mountains, with towering peaks.’
