San Ying Tower is located in the bustling heart of Nanxiong City and stands as a landmark of the city. Originally constructed during the Northern Song Dynasty around 1009 AD and later renovated in the Ming Dynasty, this ancient tower, approximately 50 meters high, is one of the few brick towers from the early Northern Song period in Guangdong Province with an exact date of construction. It is said that at the time of its completion, the smooth surface of the tower acted like a mirror, reflecting three images of the tower itself, a testament to the exquisite design of the structure, hence the name ‘San Ying Tower’.
San Ying Tower is believed to have been built in honor of Xiao Tong, the son of Emperor Wu of Liang, who drove away the plague. The tower features a nine-story structure with a hexagonal plan, and an internal wooden staircase leads to the top floor. It is a mysterious design feature that visitors must exit the tower door, walk around the tower, and enter another door to ascend to the next level. Visitors who climb the tower and look out over the Nanxiong scenery can also reflect on the wonder of the ‘three reflections’ of the tower. The tower is open all year from 8:00 to 17:00. It is important to note that visitors cannot enter the tower but can only admire it from a distance behind a fence.San Ying Tower Square
