Piyun Tower is located on the western side of Renmin Middle Road in Duanzhou District, on the ancient city wall of Duanzhou. It was originally constructed in the third year of the Zhenghe period during the Northern Song Dynasty (AD 1118). The tower consists of three levels and was built as a watchtower. It comprises two parts: Piyun Tower and a battery. The tower is named Piyun because it often stands shrouded in clouds on the top of the western section of the city wall.

The current Piyun Tower was reconstructed in 1989, standing at a height of 19.3 meters. Its design is inspired by famous Chinese pavilions such as Tengwang Pavilion in Jiangxi, Yellow Crane Tower in Hubei, and Feiyun Tower in Shanxi. The internal structure is a reinforced concrete simulation of wooden structural arches, with three levels of pass-through gates, and a roof in the form of a cross-ridge structure with a mountain-shape pattern. The tower covers an area of 300 square meters. From the tower, one can overlook the scenery inside and outside the city. The tower currently houses two sets of wax figures: on the first floor is ‘Bao Gong’s Patrol’, and on the second floor is ‘The Last Emperor of the Southern Ming Dynasty in Zhaoqing’. The top floor exhibits pictures and calligraphy reflecting the history of the tower.
