The Zhang Bishi’s Former Residence, a provincial cultural relics protection unit in Guangdong Province, is located in Che Long Village, Xihe Town, Dapu County, Guangdong Province. It is 17 kilometers away from the county town of Dapu. This scenic area integrates folk customs with nature and was rated as a national AAA-level tourist attraction by the Guangdong Tourist Attraction Quality Rating Committee in early 2013.
Inside the Hakka Folk Culture Village of Dapu, there are the former residences of Zhang Bishi, known as the father of Chinese wine and founder of Changyu Winery – Guanglu Di and Yunlu Di, the former residence of Zhang Yu’s first general manager Zhang Chengqing – Zizheng Di, and the former residence of Zhang Yu’s Chinese winemaker Zhang Zi Zhang, among nearly ten ancient Hakka dwellings. Terraced fields, river beaches, green bamboo, and old cows with herdsmen form a picturesque rural scene. The main building of the scenic area, Zhang Bishi’s former residence Guanglu Di, was built in the 34th year of the Guangxu period (1908 AD); it covers an area of 4180 square meters. The architectural structure consists of three main halls, four horizontal sections, and one enclosure, with 18 halls, 13 large wells, and 99 rooms. The entire building is exquisitely crafted, with a combination of painting and carving, grand and rigorous, and spectacular in momentum, making it a super large enclosed dragon house. Behind the house, there are three large docks, upper, middle, and lower. Zhang Bishi once served as the Consul General of Singapore and reached the rank of Guanglu Dafu (a first-class minister). He was received by Emperor Guangxu, Empress Dowager Cixi, Sun Yat-sen, Yuan Shikai, Zhang Xueliang, and President Wilson of the United States. Zhang Bishi was not only a tycoon in the business world but also a patriotic overseas leader, one of the Hakka Eight Sages. His spirit of hard entrepreneurship, industrial prosperity, and national spirit, as well as his patriotic thought of ‘born for the Chinese nation, serving the Chinese people,’ has always been praised. Inside the house, there are exhibition halls such as Zhang Bishi Hall, Official Culture Hall, and Wine Culture Hall. They display Qing Dynasty dragon robes, phoenix robes, phoenix crowns, official sedan chairs, weapons, as well as large wine barrels, wine jars, wine pots, wine pots, and wine cups stored in cellars a hundred years ago. The county where the scenic area is located is a famous county for Hakka cuisine in Guangdong, with many famous Hakka snacks such as pearl rice cakes, hair cakes, thin pancakes, and abacus dishes. Opening hours are from 08:30 to 17:00 all year round. Tips: 1. It is recommended to book one hour in advance to avoid waiting due to the crowd on site. 2.
