Xiehe Chapel is the earliest church on Gulangyu Island. In the mid-19th century, many devout Christians came to Gulangyu Island. In order to have a place for worship, they decided to build a church on Gulangyu Island. Then, believers from various missionary societies donated money one after another to build the church on the top of Lujiao on Gulangyu Island. In 1863, this neoclassical-style church was completed and was then called the “International Chapel”.

In 1911, the church was rebuilt and renamed “Xiehe Chapel”. After 1949, Xiehe Chapel was handed over to the Chinese church for management. By the end of March 1951, Xiehe Chapel was taken over by the elders’ and deacons’ meetings of Sanyitang Church and Fuyintang Church. After 1952, Xiehe Chapel was given to Xiamen No. 2 Hospital for use. In 1974, due to the development needs of the Second Hospital, this church was almost demolished to build the pharmacy of the Second Hospital.

However, with the great efforts of architect Mr. Bai Jiaxin, by using a method that seemingly damaged but actually preserved the church, some buildings were added around the church. Although the church is covered by the buildings, it has been preserved. Now, Xiehe Chapel has been renovated and completed, presenting itself to tourists in an old-like appearance. The opening hours are subject to the actual opening situation on the day.
