Shangxian Field is the main sports field of Xiamen University, and it is also a semi-elliptical large sports venue. By utilizing the elevation difference between the buildings and the sports field, it has been ingeniously constructed to accommodate a grandstand that can hold up to 20,000 spectators. Both the sports field and the stands are curved, resembling the upper arc of the moon, hence the name ‘Shangxian Field’.
Shangxian Field is separated from the ocean by a grove of coconut trees and a road. It used to be a naval training ground, and even the ordinary steps on the sports field seem to have endless stories to tell, shrouded in history. The inscription ‘Shangxian Field’ faintly seems to transport visitors through a tunnel of time, back to the period of the First Sino-Japanese War, when thousands of naval troops were mobilized here before going into battle. The rousing speeches of the commanders inspired the fighting spirit of all the officers and soldiers, and it feels as if one can still hear the echo of the navy’s belief in victory in the air.
